BSARCH considers sexual violence to include rape, sexual abuse, sexual assault, sex trafficking, stalking, sexual harassment, female genital mutilation, forced marriage and sexual exploitation, but this list is not exhaustive. |
| |
 |
| |
We understand that each survivor of sexual violence is unique, with their own set of experiences and needs. This is why we will never pressure you to make decisions, but rather support you to move on positively with your life in a way you feel comfortable with. At the same time, we recognise that there are a range of common short- and long-term physical, emotional, psychological and practical consequences of sexual violence and we aim to help our service users address these. |
| |
 |
| |
We also know that sexual violence is still a subject many people don't want to talk about. This can encourage unhelpful myths and misconceptions to develop and often makes it more difficult for those who've been affected to seek the support they want and need. For this reason, we aim to raise awareness and understanding of sexual violence issues in our community. |

Here are some important facts about sexual violence: |
| |
| · |
Sexual violence is not rare. 1 in 4 women in England & Wales have experienced some form of it in their lifetimes and at least 80,000 women are raped every year. |
| |
 |
| · |
86% of women who are raped know their attacker. |
| |
 |
| · |
Perpetrators of sexual violence are ordinary people who might be well respected within their community. |
| |
 |
| · |
People rarely lie about sexual violence. As with most other crimes, only around 3% of reported rapes are false allegations. |
| |
 |
| · |
Rape is not about sex. It's about power and control. |
| |
 |
| · |
No-one 'asks for' or 'deserves' sexual violence, no matter what they wear or how they behave. |
| |
 |
| · |
Sexual violence is always the responsibility of the perpetrator. It is never the victim's or anyone else's fault. |
